The Norman conquest of England

I like history very much. Why? Because it is interesting. But why it is interesting? Because we are making it. History is similar to us. It is cruel and terrible, but it can be wonderful too.

The Norman conquest of England was the occupation of England by an army of Normans and French led by William II of Normandy in 1066. William, who defeated King Harold II, at the Battle of Hastings, was crowned king at London on Christmas Day in the same year. Then he made a big reformation.

King of England, Edward the Confessor, promised William the throne, but he gave it to Harold Godwinson.  William was very, very angry. He had a lot of friends (for example pope Gregory VII), so he attacked England with 12 000 dangerous warriors and 1000 ships. The Norman army was made up of nobles, mercenaries, troops from Normandy, Flanders, Brittany and France. They were very well equipped. The English army wasn't as big as Norman one.

In the same time Norwegian king, Harald Hardrada, attacked England too (the same reason why William attacked). His army has been defeated, but Norwegian warriors killed many English men from Harold's army.

Norman and English warriors met near Hastings on 14 October 1066. English warriors were on hill, but William had archers, crossbowmen, simply bigger army, etc.

Battle of Hastings was one of the biggest battles in history. It was bloody and terrible. William and his people killed almost everybody. He won and what is important he became the king of England - anyway he was a cruel tyrant.

As you see, war isn't a good thing. In history there were a lot of bad things, but it is history and we cannot change it.
