GEORGE WASHINGTON

George Washington was born on 22th February, 1732 (or on 11th February, 1731) and he died on 14th December, 1799. He was the first President (1789–1797) of the United States of America. He was also the commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was a mason too (masons are very nice people, who follow many interesting rituals etc. ;)

Some day he and his friends colonels decided to start a big revolution (jupii!!!) against ... England :(. Why? Because England was very cruel for American colonies (big taxes etc.). Many people died during the American Revolution, but Washington won.

He built a great and a strong nation - America.

HAPPY END!!!

Richard I the Lionheart

Do you remember when I last told you about John the Lackland? Well, today I am going to tell you about his younger brother - Richard I.

Richard I was born on 8th September 1157 and he died on 6th April 1199. He was the King of England from 6th July 1189 until his death. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes, and Overlord of Brittany. A lot of knighthoods ^_^. He was known as Richard the Lionheart.

He had a reputation of a great military leader and warrior. By the age of sixteen (!), Richard had taken command of his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, King Henry II. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, he scored considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not reconquer Jerusalem.

Richard had a very "controversial" opinion about England - he was always thinking that this great country was only "a source of income" for his wars. He probably didn't even know English :O !!!

Richard died while laying siege to a French castle. He was killed by an arrow from a crossbow.

R.I.P

Richard was a very brave King, but unfortunately he never loved England :(

John Lackland

John Lackland was the King of England from 6th April 1199 until his death (nearly October 1216). He was the worst English King EVER :O !!!

John was the youngest of five sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Despite following the failed rebellion of his elder brothers between 1173 and 1174, John became Henry's favourite child.

John's brother, Richard I became king in 1189. John was a potential heir to the throne. When Richard was participating in the Third Crusade, John unsuccessfully attempted a rebellion against Richard's royal administrators. Still, when Richard died, John became a king.

During John's reign, England lost the duchy of Normandy. The baronial revolt at the end of John's reign led to the sealing of Magna Carta (something like a constitution). But John hardly ever observed Magna Carta, so the barons made another successful revolution during which John died and another king took care of England ;)

Robert Curthose
Do you remember when I last wrote about William the Conqueror? Today I will tell about his son - Robert.

Robert Curthose was the Duke of Normandy (he spent almost all of the money in treasury!) from 1087 until 1106 and an unsuccessful claimant to the throne of England. He was skillful in military exercises, but he was lazy too. He was a participant in the First Crusade.

He was born around 1054 and he died on 3rd February 1134. Robert was the eldest son of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders.  Robert's birthdate is usually given as 1054, but it may have been 1051.

As a child, he was betrothed to Margaret, the heiress of Maine, but she died before they could be wed, and Robert didn't marry until he became 40.

Some day Robert made a revolution against his father, but Matilda of Flanders reconciled them. When William the Conqueror died, Robert and his brother, Henry, were fighting each other, but Robert was defeated and he died in prison. Henry took the throne of England and became the king. Happy End -.-

 Wilhelm the Conqueror

Wilhelm I (William) was born in 1028 and he died in 1087. He had been Duke of Normandy since 1035. After a long struggle to establish his power, by 1060 his hold on Normandy was secure, and he launched the Norman conquest of England in 1066 (look at: The Norman Conquest of England) . The rest of his life was marked by struggles to consolidate his hold over England and his continental lands and by problems with his eldest son.

Wilhelm I is usually known as William the Bastard. William was the son of the unmarried Robert I (Duke of Normandy) and mysterious Herleva. During his childhood (after his father's death), members of the Norman aristocracy battled each other, because they wanted to control the duke son. In 1047 William was able to quash the rebellion and begin to establish his authority over the country.

In 1050 he married Matilda of Flanders. In the 1050s and early 1060s William became a contender for the throne of England, then held by his childless cousin Edward the Confessor. There were other potential claimants, including the powerful English earl Harold Godwinson. William built a large fleet and conquested England in September 1066, decisively defeating and killing Harold during the Battle of Hastings on 14th October 1066. He was crowned king on Christmas Day 1066.

In 1086 William ordered to write a survey listing all the landholders in England. This survey was called the Domesday Book.

William died in September 1087 while leading a campaign in northern France, after he buried Cean. He had a "little" accident with his horse ;).

William the Conqueror was a very cruel king, but he did some good things for England, too.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

ARTHUR

CONAN

 DOYLE!!!

an amazing historical character.

I suppose that when you were reading it you think: "Hmmm, who is that old man? I don't know him!". Wait! I will explain it to you.

I'm sure that you have noticed that picture in Mistery History.
Yes, yes! It is the famous Sherlock Holmes! But he isn't a real person like Queen Elizabeth II. He was just a fake! The man who invented Sherlock Holmes was Arthur Conan Doyle. His life was very mysterious.

He was born in Edinburgh in 1859. His youth wasn't very happy. His family was poor and his father was addicted to drugs and alcohol. His mother wanted to earn some money as a washerwoman.
Luckily, he left his home quickly, because the wealthy members of the Doyle family offered to pay for his studies. He studied medicine in Edinburgh. He used to oppose corporal punishment in schools.
During his studying he discovered his storytelling talent. He was good at cricket. He used to write letters to his mother very often. His teacher became the model of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle was twenty years old and in his third year of medical studies, when for the first time adventure knocked on his door. He was offered the post of ship's surgeon on the Hope , a whaling boat, about to leave for the Arctic Circle.

On the Hope Arthur became the real sailor. He wrote a book called "Captain of the Pole-Star." Doyle's first paid job was a medical officer on the steamer Mayumba, a battered old vessel navigating between Liverpool and the west coast of Africa.

But he didn't like Africa and quickly came back to England. Then he was robbed out of a lot of money by a tricky doctor. After college he became a real doctor. He used to earn a lot of money and he wrote his first Sherlock Holmes book "Study in Scarlet." Supposedly, he was the model of doctor Watson – the Holmes's partner. Arthur Conan Doyle became very poular in the USA.
He moved to London and got the best job in his life – in a newspaper where he used to write a lot of texts about Sherlock Holmes. One year later he understood that he couldn't combine doctor's and writer's career. He chose the career of a writer. He used to sign the letters to his friends: "Dr. Watson". Unfortunately, he got rid of Sherlock Holmes. He wrote a novel "The Final Problem". Profesor Moriarty - the enemy of Sherlock Holmes plunged to their deaths at The Reichenbach Falls. As a result, twenty thousand readers cancelled their subscriptions to The Strand Magazine. The Reichenbach Falls became a tourist  attraction.

After his wife's death he became interested in spiritism and  lost his friend – Houdini, who didn't approve of this. When the Boer War started he became a soldier-surgeon. He became the Boer War veteran. It was an inspiration for him. When he came back to England he wrote the famous book called: "The Hound of Baskervilles". A year later, King Edward VII knighted Conan Doyle for services rendered to the Crown during the Boer War. Supposedly, King wanted to encourage Doyle to write a new book about Sherlock Holmes. Be that as it may, His Majesty and several hundred thousand of his subjects must have been very pleased when in 1903 The Strand Magazine started serializing The Return of Sherlock Holmes .
The writer got married again. His family moved to Windelsham in Sussex. He wrote some dramas and a new famous book "The Lost World" about doctor Challenger's amazing adventures. It was his first sience fiction piece. He wrote the next book about Sherlock Holmes – "The Valley of Fear". As soon as the first World War broke out, Conan Doyle then fifty-five, offered to enlist again. But he wasn't allowed to become a soldier again. He invented some gadgets and armors for the army, but most government officials found him irritating at best. One of the exceptions was Winston Churchill, who wrote to thank him for his ideas. While writing a book, which was to be called "The British Campaign in France and Flanders" , the author was given permission to visit the British and French fronts in 1916. He was afraid of the horror of the war. During the war he lost his son Kingsley, his brother, his two brothers-in-law and his two nephews. He became a famous spiritist to contact with his dead family. As a result, the Press mocked him, the Clergy disapproved of him. He wrote some more books about doctor Challenger.
In the autumn of 1929, in spite of having been diagnosed with Angina Pectoris, Conan Doyle went off for his last tour to Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. One day he rose from his bed, and unseen went into the garden. When he was found, he was lying on the ground, one hand clutching his heart, the other holding a single white snowdrop. Arthur Conan Doyle died on Monday, July 7, 1930, surrounded by his family. His last words before departing for "the greatest and most glorious adventure of all," were addressed to his wife: "You are wonderful". Then he died.

Celts

Celts
I've created a presentation about Celts, because they are mysterious.
(I'm sorry but I must say that the text will be about massacres, but Celts were a bit cruel and a presentation about this nation without a tiny bit of massacre would be a tiny bit absurd.)
Origin
Celts are very intresting. They were from Kurgan (in south Germany), but they settled down in the whole West Europe, in the area of today's Russia and on the Arabian Peninsula.

This green-marked area is the area where Celts settled down.
Celts' Skills
Celts were once technologically advanced. They started the Iron Age in Europe. They were proficient in farming, pottery, animal husbandry and iron treatment. The strangest thing in it is the fact that Celts used to get the iron from the marshes!!!
Druids
The most mysterious Celts were druids. They were very talented. They were proficient in mathematics and astronomy. But some Celts thought that druids could fly. Phi, nonsens. There were also bards. They were a kind of priests, but they used to visit a lot of cities and sing songs ( of course songs about massacres). Druids had some special mysterious symbols. The most famous are the Celtic cross and the swastica. The both symbolized the sun.

This old man is a druid (but he can't fly).

Gods
Celtic gods are very interesting like their believers. The king of the Celtic gods was Dagda ( yes, I know, very strange name). I will not list all gods, but I have created a special table.
Name
Specialization
Dagda
The Boss
Morrigan
Watching batlles with cold blood
Beleneus
Farming
Lug
Figthing with spear
Tailtiu and Machu
Nature
Epona
Horses (of course combat horses)
Goibniu
Beer
Cernunnos
Nobody knows
This is Special table.

Culture
Celtic Culture survived to this day in form of languages and music. You can hear some music here.
Celtic languages are Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Breton. Nowadays those languages are rare. Breton is classified as "severely endangered" by the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger. But some people still talk in Celtic languages.
Good morning in Irish is
DIA HUIT!

I’m sorry but it is
THE END
